Pooch in Recovery

I had actually written a post about this the other day when it was still funny... before we realized it was anything serious. And then I didn't finish it and didn't post it. I didn't know that there would be more to the story. But now that I know the happy ending, I can fill all our faithful readers in on this week's Adventures with Nacho.

We have a small peach tree in our backyard that we were really excited about when we moved in. It has not really been producing any fruit all summer, but suddenly, little orange balls have started to appear. Apparently Nacho noticed the new growth in the backyard as well. Unbeknownst to us, Nacho had been taking peaches off the tree to eat. I think this all started and ended in one day, but once he started, it seemed he was unable to stop. On Tuesday afternoon we found three peach pits in the backyard, and we once opened the back door to find Nacho staring up at us with peach juice just dripping off his jowls.

We weren't too worried about it until 4:00 the next morning when he threw up in his crate. What do you think we found? A peach pit. Apparently he had not immediately learned that he couldn't eat that part of his new favorite treat. But again, we weren't worried. Until later that morning... he had been pacing and eating grass all morning. Around 11 when we let him out again, he threw up all of his breakfast, but nothing else. That was a pretty good indicator that there was something in him that needed to come out, but couldn't.

We called the vet and she said to bring him in right away because if it was a peach pit, it could be really dangerous. She had actually seen a dog die from swallowing a peach pit. They are way too hard for a body to breakdown, and they are also pretty sharp on the ends, so they can tear up a dog's insides. Well, long story short, Nacho swallowed a peach pit. The vet had to do emergency stomach surgery and found the little sucker lodged very tightly on the turn that would take food from his small intestines to his large intestines.

Also, Nacho is apparently, as the vet tech put it, a "cheap date." We have had to cut his pain medication into quarters so that he is at least semi-conscious during the day. He has been taking it easy... and I have been trying my hardest to just read on the couch and snuggle with him all day long so that he has some company :-) He should be back to himself in about a week or two. I guess I better get all those ripening peaches off that tree and make a cobbler or something so that this doesn't happen again!

So glad he's going to be ok! Can't believe you posted a picture of the actual peach. Please tell me didn't carry it home in your pocket. :) I'm missing a sweet picture of Nacho, too. :)

I suspect that all the cuddling on the couch is very therapeutic for both of you. Hope Nacho is back to feeling himself again soon.
