Tummy Time or Snuggle Time?

I tried to lie Adelaide down for some tummy time this afternoon.  Nacho got confused and thought it was snuggle time.

Adelaide promptly fell asleep.

stats

It seems weird to post something like this without a picture to go with it, but I just don't have that all together right now.

Adelaide turned 1 month old last Friday! Crazy. And fun.  She is adorable. Just trust me on that since I'm not posting a picture. We went to the pediatrician and here's where she stands:

  • 8 lbs 4oz (25th percentile... this is right on track. At 2 weeks she was 7lbs 6oz, so she gained 14 ounces in 14 days! go girl.)
  • 21 inches long (50th percentile... who knew I could have a child of average height?!)
  • 14 inch head circumference (25th percentile... but who really cares about the head circumference???)

She is starting to smile and "coo" a little bit - especially in the mornings after a good night sleep and her first feeding and diaper change of the day.

She loves to watch the mobile above her swing and the look at the tissue paper pom pom thingies above the changing table.

She took her first bottle from Daddy Schub last night.  Homegirl downed like 5 ounces in less than 10 minutes.  It's good to know that she will take a bottle so that Schub can feed her if he wants or we can give a bottle to a babysitter or give her a bottle while we're out doing errands or something if we needed to.

Last night she slept 6 hours at one stretch (with assistance from the swing, which we started putting her in to sleep a couple weeks ago). It was awesome and I hope she keeps up the good work.

She still has lots and lots of hair, beautiful eyes and skin, and I love to watch her stretch, and I kind of love it when she starts to cry and her little bottom lip starts to poke out.

Adelaide's Baptism

Sweet Adelaide got baptized this past Sunday.  She got to wear the little gown that Jason wore when he was baptized and she of course looked beautiful.  We were so so glad to have both our parents there and... Jason's aunt Meredith surprised us and came with his parents from NC so that she could see both the baptism and Jason's ordination later that evening.  It was a really special morning for our new little family!

Adelaide was great (homegirl slept through the whole thing).

No more denying it

It's official. I'm a real, bonified pastor's wife. I used to just be a "seminary wife" and then I could say I was just an "intern's wife," but now I'm a real live pastor's wife.  You know, the kind that bakes bread and does crafts with children all day?  Just kidding :-)

OK... so this post isn't about me at all! It's about my incredible husband, Jason Christopher Schubert, and the fact that he is an official PASTOR.  After approximately a bajillion of hours studying, 6 written tests, several papers (ones that he had to take the time to write b/c none of his from seminary fit the criteria), several face-to-face interviews, and a day of being grilled by the elders of the presbytary (4 days after his first child was born, i might add)... Jason passed it all and was seen fit to shepherd God's people and accept his call as Associate Pastor at Grace Presbyterian Church.

My parents, Jason's parents, and his aunt Meredith were all in town to attend his installation service (and Adelaide's baptism that morning, of course). AND some of our neighbors, one of his friends from NC State who lives in DC, and some friends that we met in our birthing class (random, right?  Their baby girl was due around the same time as ours so we were in two classes with them at the hospital... turns out he is a pastor like 20 minutes away. We are all friends now) ALL came to see Schub become a pastor.

The service was really awesome.  Neither of us had ever been to an ordination service before.  There was a charge to Jason and also a charge to the congregation.  We sang hymns that Jason had picked out.  All the pastors/elders that we were there (from our church and from others in the presbytary) laid hands on him to pray for him as he enters the ministry and takes all the responsibility and joys and trials that come along with that  And then Jason got to give the benediction at the end of the service.  There was a really nice reception afterwards.

(these BEAUTIFUL flowers are now taking up residency on my dining room table!)
\
We were overwhelmed by the number of people from our congregation who were there to support and encourage him. We are excited and challenged by what a lifetime of ministry is going to look like in the church.  I know that by God's grace, Jason will do a wonderful job of leading and encouraging and challenging and teaching and shepherding God's people; it is what he has been called to do!

Congratulations my love!! I am so so so proud of you!!!

Good News

Well, I thought I'd post an update since I'm sure everyone is so incredibly interested in Adelaide's sleep patterns. Just wanted to let you all know that she slept 3-3.5 hrs at a time last night. She ate at 7pm and we laid her down around 8... then she woke up at 11pm, 2:30am and 5:45am... then she went back to sleep for another 1.5-2 hrs before we all woke up for the morning. So the night before was hopefully a weird fluke night. We all slept great last night.

Thanks for all the tips for good sleep!  I plan to try every single piece of advice in hopes of getting the babe to sleep as long as possible right now and through the night as soon as possible!

Finally

This is definitely the opposite of what she did last night. I'm blaming it on a 3 week growth spurt, seeing as she is exactly 3 weeks today, and the books say she'll have a growth spurt at 7-10 days, 3 weeks and 6 weeks.  And definitely about a week or two ago, she did this same "cluster feeding" thing as she did last night, where it seems like she wants to eat every hour or hour and a half. Good grief that is exhausting.  And poor Jason was up all night with me, probably more than I was. I would feed her and then he would attempt to get her to sleep.... which was impossible.

I am open to any and all suggestions from experienced moms regarding how to get a baby to figure out the difference between night time and day time. And now there is an adorable, sweet little baby girl calling to me that it is time to eat again.

*for the record, she was swaddled and she houdini-ed her way out of it. i promise i was being careful that there were no blankets in position to suffocate her!
