Ch Ch Ch Chia

We've been talking about wanting to plant some of our own veggies and herbs for a while now. But let's be honest. You just cannot really do too much of that in Atherton. So for Christmas Schub's parents gave us a Chia herb garden. We've been saving it until after we had moved to plant it. I had absolutely no idea how this stuff works. Did anyone ever have a chia pet back in the 80's? My parents never would have bought into something like that, so this is my first experience with a chia-something. Did you know that the soil is just like this big sponge that you soak? It's really wierd. It's like a sponge made out of dirt. But it all stays together when you put it underwater. Then you sprinkle the seeds on top and then put a bag over the whole little pot to create a little greenhouse effect. I have no clue when you take the bag off. I guess when it starts to grow.

It definitely doesn't grow like it does on the commercials... that is, instantly. But hopefully we'll have some herbs soon! Chives, parsley, dill, and cilantro (woohoo! i love cilantro) to be exact.

P.S. If you go to www.chia.com (also the maker of the Clapper - you know, "clap on -- clap off -- clap on clap off...") you can buy a Barak Obama chia pet. hahahaha. Brooke, maybe I'll get that for Miles for Christmas.

Apparently Walgreens sold the Obama Chia pet for awhile and then took it off the market because they were afraid it was insensitive to the Prez. It really hurt Mr. Chia's feelings.

Hilarious.....that's a great idea for Miles. Looks like you'll need to search the black market for it. Sounds like a great first garden for us. We've made zero progress on ours. :)
